BTP Card — What Is It and How to Get One for Construction Workers?

2025-02-01 5 min read

The BTP card (Carte d'identification professionnelle du BTP) is a mandatory document for every construction worker on a French site — whether local or posted from abroad. Without one, an inspector can order the worker off-site immediately.

What is the BTP card?

The BTP card is a plastic ID card issued by the CNETP fund (Caisse nationale des entrepreneurs de travaux publics de France). It shows the worker's name, photo, card number, and employer information. It identifies the worker on site and confirms they have been properly registered.

Who needs a BTP card?

Every worker in the BTP sector (Bâtiment et Travaux Publics) must carry one:

  • Construction workers (bricklayers, carpenters, concrete workers, plasterers)
  • Installation tradespeople (electrical, plumbing, HVAC)
  • Roadworks and earthworks operatives
  • Anyone else physically working on a French construction site

The requirement applies to both permanent employees and workers posted from other EU countries.

How much does a BTP card cost?

The official CNETP fee is approximately €10.80 per card (2025 rate). This is paid by the employer. The card is valid for the duration of employment with that employer.

Our service fee for handling the BTP card application is 149 PLN per card. This covers filing the application, tracking the status, and notifying you when the card is ready.

How to apply for a BTP card

The employer submits the application through the CNETP portal (cnetp.org). Required information:

  • Employer details (name, address, registration number)
  • Worker details: name, date of birth, nationality
  • Worker photo (biometric, passport-style)
  • SIPSI reference number (required for posted workers)

How long does processing take?

Standard processing time is 5–10 working days from submission of a complete application. Incomplete applications cause delays. The card is mailed to the worker or provided electronically.

What happens during an inspection without a BTP card?

A missing BTP card is grounds for immediate DREETS intervention. The worker can be removed from site. The employer faces an administrative fine of up to €2,000 per worker.

Is the BTP card valid across all of France?

Yes — the BTP card is valid anywhere in France, with no regional restrictions. One worker, one card per employer.
